Breitling and aviation chronographs

Breitling was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The brand became known for chronographs and instruments, with the Navitimer joining its story as an aviation-oriented wrist chronograph. Its circular slide rule can perform certain calculations when used correctly, though it is not a substitute for modern navigation equipment.

The brand's portfolio now spans aviation-inspired watches, divers and more versatile sports designs. Vintage history is useful context, but check the production period and exact reference for specifications.

Navitimer, Chronomat and Superocean

Navitimer is the most recognizable Breitling family for many enthusiasts, typically combining a chronograph with a busy slide-rule bezel. Chronomat has a distinct sports-watch design and includes chronograph references. Superocean is the brand's dive-watch family, with models differing in depth rating, dimensions and movement.

A slide rule requires familiarization and a model with a chronograph can have more controls and service needs than a time-only watch. Try the watch in person to assess legibility, case size and crown comfort.

Movements and certification

Breitling uses automatic and other movement types across its range, and many mechanical models are COSC-certified chronometers. Certification status is model-specific. COSC evaluates timekeeping under a defined test; it does not replace an inspection of a particular pre-owned watch's current condition.

Confirm the calibre, chronometer status, water resistance and service interval for the exact reference. The watch's actual performance depends on condition, adjustment and maintenance.

Buying a Breitling

Chronograph pushers, slide-rule markings, bezel action and bracelet links should all be checked on a pre-owned Navitimer. On a Superocean, verify the crown, seals, bezel and recent pressure test before any water use. Obtain service history and inspect for parts changes or refinishing.

Large case dimensions are common in some Breitling lines, so compare lug-to-lug span and thickness as well as diameter. Buy through a seller with clear authentication, return and warranty terms; do not treat a brand name as proof of condition or future resale value.
